Mastering a new talent or skill is very difficult. The same goes for trying to master the English language. Unfortunately, the English language most students in Hong Kong learn in school are not enough for to be able to fully master the language.
Last year, the South China Morning Post published an article entitled “Two-third of Hong Kong secondary school students say English classes left them unprepared for future”. This is quite troublesome because it means that the current English language syllabus in the Special Administrative Region is not enough to prepare the students for their future.
The article was based from the survey results released by the Hong Kong Education Policy Concern Organization and the Women Teachers’ Organization. The survey also found that students wished they had more training in speaking and writing in English.
With this, here are some ways in which one can sharpen his or her English skills.
- Watch English Movies or Series
This method can hit two birds with one stone. This can be entertaining and a form of relaxation; and at the same time, it can help one observe and hear how native tongues use the language. Eventually, someone consistently hearing a language can learn to adapt their usage of words as well as the correct pronunciation. In some cases, even the accent is adapted. Try this out on the weekend and choose an interesting Netflix film.
- Watch the News in English
News anchors tend to report news in a very fast paced manner. This is due to the limited time and lots of things that needs to be delivered to the people. With this, it will allow the learner to be accustomed with English even when the pacing is fast. Eventually, his or her brain will adapt and his or her response to the English language will be quicker.
- Read Books in English
Books are a perfect example of how the English language is used creatively. This is also a perfect method for learners to adapt to certain vocabulary words. In addition, the learner will also be accustomed to different writing styles and artistic grammatical usage.
- Write in English
Writing in English can allow the learner to discover new vocabulary words and practice his or her sentence construction. In addition, the learner will be able to be more aware of his or her grammatical errors. This will also allow the learner to gain more confidence in using the language through practicing with no one else watching.
- Talk to Your Friends and Family in English
This method will allow the learner to be accustomed to the English language through regular everyday conversations. Eventually, it will be so casual to the point that he or she has learned a whole lot more without even realizing it.
- Get a Tutor
The best way to learn the English language quicker and wiser is by getting a tutor. The tutor will be able to properly teach the learner and correct his or her mistakes.
